On Chinese New Years and Calendars: Dealing with the Changes

Once again, we are celebrating New Year, and this time Chinese New Year, the Filipino way. Everyone is busy wherever you go. Some are out in China Town, Binondo, Manila to witness the festive celebration including the famous dragon dance. Mind you, these dragons are longer now. However, others are busy buying Tikoy or Nian Gao, a Chinese sweet dessert made from rice. Chinese and some Filipino families, as usual, are busy collecting 13 rounded fruits, collecting lucky coins and other lucky charms and cooking lucky food. Last night many people went out of their way to see their favorite celebrities, including Banana Split ABS CBN Show hosts, and to be part of the Chinese New Year countdown. Gone are the days when everyone has to be home for New Year's countdown to make sure everyone is safe and united the whole year. Anyways, while there are still families who reunite for this special occasion, most of us including myself, greet everyone else in social media sites. It's the most practical way to say "I remembered you today."

However, it's February now and I am still in search for the right calendar for our walls at home. You see, when I was a child, we had these real huge or large wall calendars that most small, medium and large establishments give away during New Year. They were usually from gasoline stations, drug stores, hardware shops, or malls. During Chinese New Year, of course we get to receive another set of large calendars from Chinese businessmen. These calendars were a big help especially for my mom who needed to plot down bill due dates, events and other reminders. They were so huge, you can actually write on them different notes. My grandma would even use permanent markers and cross out some dates, I guess she was just trying to remember what day it was or maybe she was plotting down how late the house rental payment has been for some tenants.

I guess, there was an oversupply of these wall calendars allowing most food sellers to use them as wrappers instead of plastic or paper bags. Anyway, I miss them. For some reason, I want to be more mindful of the days. Number your days and gain a heart of wisdom, this Bible verse is more real to me these days. However, don't get me wrong, we do have wall calendars at home. Since many politicians in our area are starting to campaign for the May 2013 elections, we are getting a lot already. I think they all want to have their pictures in our walls because we are getting an oversupply of them as well. However, just like the calendar below, these are not single month type of calendars like the one above. They're more like this one below and the dates are smaller because you have the running candidate's picture and promises all over them.

I guess the lack of huge or large wall calendars are due to paperless crusades, campaigns for environmental protection, or other cost-saving strategies. There is also an oversupply of electronic calendars and there also other electronic gadgets like cellphones, iPod, laptop, tablets where you can find calendars, set reminders or notes and even get an alarm or alert for set dates. I use most of these gadgets too. It's either I'm just me again, wanting things done fast, or am just too busy, or am just saving too. I mean with a wall calendar, you can just pick a pen and have things noted in seconds. You don't need to turn on your gadgets and spend time trying doing or searching for dates and notes. Of course, you don't use electricity as much if you don't use your electronic gadgets as often, less charging time.

Fortunately, there are downloadable calendars too. Some I accidentally found while searching for pictures to add here. Perhaps, these stuff will do for now. They are large enough and they fit my entire screen. Some of course, I can purchase somewhere else too so I can have a real wall calendar. However, if you know of any establishments still giving out these wall calendars, that I am so obsessed about, please let me know. It's February, I know but I am still interested in having one of those in one of these walls.
